Error message

Possible inappropriate use of the structural element “Figure”

Matterhorn error condition

01-006 (The structure type and attributes of a structure element are not semantically suitable for the structure element.)

explanation

There is a figure tag in the document whose placement attribute is probably set incorrectly. A graphic can either be located within another element/paragraph (inline) or stand separately in the document without being integrated into a paragraph (block). Depending on the placement, the associated figure tag must either be embedded in another tag (e.g. paragraph tag) or stand alone. In addition to correctly positioning the figure tag within the tag structure tree, its placement attribute must also be set correctly. It is set to "inline" by default, but can also be adjusted to "block".

solution in Adobe Acrobat Pro

solution approach

To fix the error, the placement attribute must be configured to match the positioning of the figure tag. For example, if the figure tag is inside a paragraph tag, the placement attribute of the figure tag must be set to "inline". However, if the figure tag stands alone, the correct value for the placement attribute is "block".

More Information

picture instructions

1. In the search bar, search for the tool “Accessibility Tags” and open it

2. Right-click the Figure tag >
Click "Properties..."

3. Open the “Tag” tab >
Click "Edit Attribute Objects..."

4. Expand the “Attribute objects” root (click the “+” sign) >
Select “Attribute Object 1” >
Click "New Item"

5. Enter “Placement” (in “Key” field) >
Enter “Block” (in “Value” field) >
click "OK"

Note: It is possible that the "Attribute object 1" of your figure tag already has a "Placement" element. In such a case, if you try to create a new "Placement" element, you will receive the error message "You have entered a key twice. Enter a unique identifier or cancel the operation". So cancel the creation of the new element and instead look for the already existing "/Placement" element in the "Attribute object 1". Select it, then click on "Change element" and set the value to "Block" (or, depending on the figure tag position, to "Inline").

As soon as you save the document and check it again with the PDF Accessibility Checker, the error message Possible inappropriate use of the structural element “Figure” disappeared.

When saving, make sure to give the document a new name (e.g. Document Title_Rev2) and not oversave the previous version of the document. This way, you can go back to the previous version of the document if something goes wrong.
