Error message
Untagged text object
Matterhorn error condition
01-005 (Content is neither marked as an artifact nor tagged as real content.)
explanation
The document contains textual content that has not yet been properly tagged. This can mean that you still have to rely on the visual form of the document when understanding the structure and content of the PDF, as various auxiliary tools (e.g. screen readers) can usually only evaluate the tagged information.
solution in Adobe Acrobat Pro
solution approach
To fix the error, all textual content must be tagged. If it is not relevant in terms of content (e.g. due to redundancies), it must be marked as artifacts.

More Informationpicture instructions
1. In the search bar, search for the tool “Accessibility Tags” and open it
2. Right-click the “Document” tag (in the “Tags” structure tree)>
Click “New Day…”
3. Select tag type >
Click “OK”
Note: In the current example, we want to tag a small part of a paragraph, so we'll choose the "Paragraph" type here. However, if you want to tag a heading, a table or something else, you should choose the appropriate type here.
4. Place the newly created tag into the document structure >
Mark tag (with one click)
5. Mark text that still needs to be tagged >
right-click on the empty paragraph tag >
Click “Create tag from selection”
Note: In the current example, only the last word of a paragraph has not yet been tagged. In this case, creating a new paragraph tag would not have made sense, since this untagged word belongs in the existing paragraph tag anyway. However, to explain how to create a completely new tag, we proceeded as if the last word no longer belonged to the paragraph, but represented a separate paragraph.
As soon as you save the document and check it again with the PDF Accessibility Checker, the error message Untagged text object disappeared.
When saving, make sure to give the document a new name (e.g. Document Title_Rev2) and not oversave the previous version of the document. This way, you can go back to the previous version of the document if something goes wrong.
Tips for Error Prevention
Create your document using a standard word processing program such as Microsoft Word, as the software automatically tags the textual content when exporting to PDF. If certain textual content is not relevant to the content, you can place it in the header/footer, which will then be tagged as an artifact when exporting to PDF. In theory, you could also place such content in a text box and then declare the text box as decorative. However, you should limit the use of text boxes to an absolute minimum, as they can quickly lead to sloppy document formatting.
